An AI desktop assistant that listens, then gets to work
Desktop Companion is an AI desktop app for Windows with an animated character as its face. Tell it what you need, out loud or by typing: it looks things up on the web, reads a page for you, drafts a Word document or an Excel sheet, or launches an app from the list you've allowed, then reports back in its own voice. With screen vision on, it answers questions about what's in front of you, and it remembers you from one day to the next. The AI runs on your PC in either edition; on itch.io, it can also use a cloud provider if you bring your own key.
One-time fee: $12.90. Early access, lifetime license.
Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit. For adults (18+). Made by a solo developer in France.
Search, read, write, open: the four things you'll ask for most
An AI desktop assistant that does things: it runs web searches, reads and sums up any page, writes or edits Word, Excel, Markdown, text, and HTML files, and opens apps and files, all inside the folders and apps you've allowed. Chain a few together and it reports back in your character's tone.
No API key and no account in either edition. A small local model runs the tools, or, quicker, your cloud provider on itch.io. Weather, trends, folder contents and the active window are in there too, and that's not the whole list. What a tool sends out is in the privacy policy.
This desktop AI assistant won't take over: no mouse, no keyboard, and your files stay where they are.
A voice assistant for Windows, now that Cortana is gone
Siri for PC doesn't exist, and Cortana is retired; Desktop Companion fills the gap as a mini JARVIS-style AI on your desktop. Press play on the dock or say your wake word: it listens, answers in its own voice, and does the task you asked for. It understands and speaks eight languages. Voices run locally in either edition, cloning takes a seven-to-fifteen-second clip, and itch.io adds cloud voices with a key of your own. Speech recognition never leaves your PC. An itch.io cloud provider only has access to the AI's answers and, if you want them, the voices. Never your microphone.
The voice belongs to a character, nine to pick from or your own. In anime AI companion mode, any of them can speak Japanese, with subtitles in your language.
Show it your screen instead of describing it
Some things are quicker to show than to type out. Once it's on, screen vision lets it see what you see: the error box that means nothing to you, the formula that refuses to add up, the settings page you've been staring at for ten minutes. Ask what's going on and it answers based on what's actually on screen. No screenshot to take, nothing to paste. Local mode keeps every capture on your PC; if you've plugged in your own cloud provider on itch.io, that provider gets them. Nobody else does.
Between two requests, it doesn't disappear. It stays as an overlay across your apps and has a life of its own while you work. That's the AI desktop pet side of it, and it has a page of its own.
What people say once it's done a job for them
Comments from itch.io and Discord.
“The new update was pretty sick, I love the tool stuff”
“Mindblowing update. A dramatic upgrade in utility.”
“It's been a blast to play games at full settings while using DC with tools on”
Same tools in both editions, with two differences
The search, the files, and the voices don't change from one to the other. Where the model behind them runs does, and so does the PC you need.

For everything local, you'll need the same graphics card as Steam. | A graphics card with at least 8 GB of VRAM (12 to 16 GB to run everything locally), 16 GB of RAM, 30 GB free disk space, Windows 10 (1903 or later) or 11, 64-bit |
Same tools on both, so choose based on your hardware. A laptop with integrated graphics means itch.io with a cloud key. Got a PC with a proper graphics card? You can run everything locally on either. Steam is the one that never talks to a cloud AI service at all.
What people ask about the assistant
For the everyday stuff, yes: you talk to it, it talks back, and it can search, read, write, and open things for you. What it doesn't do is run Windows itself: no alarms, no changing your settings, no calls. Reminders and a timer are planned for a later update. Think of it as a voice you can hand real tasks to, with a character attached, rather than a system feature.
Either. There's a chat window for typing. To talk, press play on the dock or say the wake word you've set, hands-free. It answers out loud in both cases, with its words shown on screen if you'd rather read along. Speech works in eight of the app's ten languages; the interface is also available in Simplified Chinese and Korean.
Yes, on itch.io, with a cloud provider and your own key. The tools normally rely on a small model running locally. With integrated graphics, or a card with 4 GB of memory or less, that model is switched off and the provider does the thinking instead. It's faster that way anyway. With a proper graphics card and 8 GB of VRAM or more, the tools run entirely on your PC in either edition.
No subscription, ever. One payment, either edition, with updates included during early access. No API key for the tools. The only key you'll ever type in is your own cloud provider's, on itch.io, if you'd rather run the AI there than on your PC. That provider charges you at its own rates, and we're not in the loop.
Give it its first job
Install it, pick a character, and try the first thing that comes to mind: a search, a page to sum up, a file to draft. It's on itch.io today; on Steam, the 100% local edition arrives October 15.
